Wanda Shoemaker, YOU ROCK

"My mom is amazing; she needs to be recognized. Not only has she been a model of perfection & consistent source of unconditional love throughout my life, but she is now 54 & taking on a whole new challenging role as legal guardian of one of her grandchildren as well. My niece, Hayley, is 6 years old, & very incapable of doing most things normal children can do. Three years ago, Hayley suffered a spinal cord injury which left her temporarily paralyzed from the neck down. MRI revealed a rare, genetic brain stem malformation called a chiari, which caused her to be severely injured extremely easily. We had no idea her little body was so fragile until it was too late. In the absence of my sister, my parents stepped up to the plate to make sure that Hayley had the best care available. Hayley has made leaps and bounds in her recovery, but the process is long. My mom has spent all of her time & energy into getting Hayley to all of her various therapy sessions, keeping on top of the ever-changing healthcare plans and insurance requirements, keeping Hayley fitted properly for all of her medical needs (wheelchair, leg braces, canes, walkers, etc.), all while being Hayley's biggest supporter and making sure she lives as normal of a life as she possibly can. Meanwhile, no attention is ever taken away from her other grandchildren, her children, or my dad. Her nickname is "Wanda Woman", and she is definitely a modern Super Heroine. My mother is a graceful example of faith and virtue; her legacy will continue through me indefinitely, as I follow in her footsteps as wife and mother. I leave the nest in 2 weeks to prepare for my August wedding in Alabama.

I thank you for taking the time to read about my mother, although 300 words are not nearly enough to give you a good picture of her worthiness. I'm not sure what is more exciting, the prize or simply the recognition as a deserving, rockstar mom!"
